"I'm
overqualified for most things; perfect for tutoring.” I believe my expansive experience, excellent qualifications and outstanding achievements at senior level should be an asset for potential employers, the unfortunate truth is that being overqualified will often sound alarm bells for a recruiter/potential employer. This can be for a number of reasons including that you will soon get bored with the role and leave, jump ship as soon as something better comes along, have salary expectations far higher than being offered or worse, make a play for their management role! Dumbing down a resume or worse Building a relationship that is founded on lies is destined to turn sour down the track. I asked myself how can I develop my job search in order to avert being screened out due to any of the reasons mentioned above? My answer is work for myself! I don't go through Human Resources, I go through Purchasing... It's a win-win situation. Here's why: It's a question about attitude. Captive employees think one way, and outside vendors think entirely differently. Employees look to others to tell them what to do and when to do it. A vendor will operate on their own initiative. They don't just talk; they do. They don't just wish things were better; they make things better. And if their client treats them poorly, they simply move on to a new client that appreciates the value they are delivering. Captive employees value the security of a full-time job. Consultants value freedom and independence. They understand that freedom and independence are essential to the full realization of their potential. We fully appreciate that real security comes from developing highly marketable skills and doing them well. Am I Just Responsible, Or Am I Fully Accountable? You can delegate responsibility. You can never delegate accountability. Captive employees are responsible for doing what they are told to do, but they are seldom held accountable for anything. Independent professionals are accountable. Period. Independent professionals are accountable for the success of their own careers. They are accountable for acquiring the specific marketable skills and experience that bring value to their clients. They are accountable for the quality of their work. They are accountable for identifying business opportunities and for markting their services. They are accountable for developing and maintaining satisfying and productive relationships with their clients. We are accountable. Period. Do I Need My Client, Or Does My Client Need Me? Contract assignments start and contract assignments end. Consultants know that they work at the whim of their clients and we know that our clients are the one's who need us. We fully appreciate that real security comes from developing highly marketable skills and doing them well. We value freedom and independence over the false security of captive employment. We understand that who we are has more to do with what we do and how well we do it than whom they do it for. Viewing the end of your gig as an excellent opportunity to land a better gig, we understand that freedom and independence are essential to the full realization of their potential. Captive employees value the security of a full-time job. Employees need to be employed, and they identify closely with their employer. Whom they work for is part of who they are. Employees view job loss as a form of betrayal; a broken trust. Employees view temp-to-perm arrangements as an inconvenience on the road to full-time employment. That's the fundamental difference! Captive employees are responsible for doing what they are told to do, but they are seldom held accountable for anything. Independent professionals are accountable. Period. It's a Question of Attitude - Captive employees think one way, and outside vendors think entirely differently 1. You hire me directly! You know what you are getting and
know what it will cost. (and for as long as you want me!)
